The Wedding Quilt - Things Got a Little Fishy

My sister's son married a sweet girl this summer. We couldn't be there, so we decided to make them a quilt, hoping they'd know how much we love them in spite of not being able to make it. They are fishermen (people?) and artists. We tried to encompass both of those things with the quilt we made.
Oh, and by we.... I mean I did the background and Jess did all the epic stuff. I do like my background but I LOVE what Jess did.

The lure was taken from a painting that my new niece, Shelby, did of a lure Tayler made. The fish is from one of his photos. Jess did an amazing job translating them into the quilt. I believe she may post some details of her process.
We chose batiks to help give it a water feel. I had some anxious moments trying to figure out how to get what was in my head to work with the fabric. I'm sure I could have found a tutorial somewhere but apparently I need to torment myself sometimes..... When it finally clicked with me, it was a lot of fun and I want to do it again.
The fish and lure are both raw edge appliqué. The trout also has painted details.
We backed it in a lovely plaid flannel, perfect for cold winter nights.

Quilt details:
Approx 60 x 70
Fish and lure - Kona Cottons
Background - Batiks from JoAnn Fabrics
Backing - Flannel from JoAnn Fabrics
Thread - Aurifil 50w
Batting - Pellon's Nature Touch 100% cotton

I've added our quilt to the Blogger's Quilt Festival in the Art quilt catagory.

A Quilt for Mom

Another in the long line of things we've done and haven't blogged. I used my Go cutter to make 4 inch squares from my scrap stash. I am not sure why but when ever I go scrappy, I also autopilot into ROYGBIV. Maybe this shows a lack of imagination or maybe I just love rainbows. Either way, I am happy with the results.

Rounded corners give the quilt a softer look.
I love that I had enough fabrics that each square is different.
Simple straight-line quilting on the diagonal.

The backing is a wool blend I have had for forever. It started out grey and I dyed it this pretty purple. I used it to make this jacket several years ago.

Thanks for stopping by!

Fall Wreath and Garland

Last year I got back on my kick of making decorations for all the holidays (which had totally gone to pot since moving again and not decorating for a single holiday yet this year... must get out halloween decorations.... ) We don't  really celebrate all the holidays because I just never seem to find the time for that. BUT decorating for them and adding fun bright temporary decorations to the house is totally something I can get behind.

My fall section is severely lacking (as in I have NONE) so I finally came across this idea for a wreath and liked it enough to run with it with a bunch of changes. LIKE for one I am not going to knit a bunch of yarn into sheets and then felt them as the instructions said (I am all for crazy but what is Lion Brand smoking?!?) Instead I spent a ridiculous amount of time cutting out leaves from wool felt and then I washed them all to get the texture. Then I wrapped metal wire in yarn (see that is stupid crazy) and sewed the metal on to each individual leaf. Then I also made felt pinecones and berries... because it seemed reasonable (ahem) - there's more pictures below with progress shots
I also finally got around to making an acorn garland. I gathered the large acorns caps on the trip we took to Tennessee 3 years ago. I used Dad's drill press to put 2 holes in the top of each cap and then strung them on copper colored leather. It was a super fun project except that I really never want to felt tiny balls again... and I currently have a project in mind that would require me doing more of that....

Just so you know there are in fact a bazillion leaves on this wreath. And it definitely falls into the things I am so glad I made and never want to make again category!

Hannahs gift

We are getting close to the gift giving time of year again. And since I never showed this I thought it would be a good time to show you guys a fun gift I did last year that I would personally love to get. It was for christmas but it would be awesome as a hostess or shower gift as well.
Glass Etching. Have you guys tried this?! It is SO MUCH FUN ... you will be trying to figure out how many things in your house need a permanent label!
I also borrowed dads wood burning tool and personalized some wood utensils

And then added in a handmade apron (apparently it didn't occur to me to take a photo of it unfolded) and two screen printed tea towels.

What's fun about this is you could just buy it all and not customize or hand make anything-- so you don't even have to get crafty to do the same thing for someone!

Sherrill's Quilt Tag

So originally Sherrill's quilt tag was a pillowcase. Then once I finished I realized there was a massive flaw on the back ... So it became her quilt tag. Which will probably get more use then it every would have as a pillow case...
Micah wanted to help me so he actually did quite a few stitches for me on the wording. He's not bad at it... I think he enjoyed the fact that he was stabbing something.

A mothers day gift

I realized at the the beginning of this year that I am a terrible daughter in law! I hadn't made my mother in law a quilt... I knew she would like one because one of the first things we ever did together was go to an Amish quilt fair.

When I came across Tula Pink's Acacia line, I just knew it was the fabric I had to use. It has hummingbirds which is her favorite.

Bella is performing her normal quality control checks. No quilt leaves our house without her approval.
